Doing intimate family work through ICTs in the time of networked individualism

Traditionally, family intimacy has been seen as depending on spatial proximity and physical closeness. However, due to individualization globalization, many families live apart and/or spend their days away from each other. Moreover, a shift in communication household-to-household person-to-person occurred the context of so-called networked individualism. These changes make it imperative investigate how contemporary communicate create maintain across households. Drawing concept doing intimate work, this study investigates small acts performed everyday life do through ICT We conducted interviews with 6 multigenerational – spread 18 households Sweden US. Results show responsibilities practices become part personalized technology, consequences for individual member. explore various affordances members realize actions order support these reinforce importance home base cross-household communication.
